Crew try to break through Timbers' stronghold

05/20/2011 - Portland, OR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Columbus Crew travel to take on the expansion Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer action at Jeld-Wen Field on Saturday night.

The Crew will be aiming to rebound after falling at the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 this past weekend. The loss snapped a seven-game unbeaten run by the Crew.

"It opened everybody's eyes," Crew coach Robert Warzycha told the league's site. "We can't be that confident, thinking we're that good. We have to keep working to improve."

The teams went into the break scoreless before the Crew gave up three second- half goals in the loss.

"We just didn't match their intensity," Crew defender Chad Marshall told the league's website. "We had a lapse for about 10 minutes and they finished their chances. It's unfortunate. Overall, they didn't have tons of chances, but they converted the ones that they got."

The Timbers are coming off a 1-1 draw at Seattle, just their second road result of the season, but are 4-0-0 at home.

"I'd like to think that we erased that question mark, that we can play on the road," Timbers coach John Spencer said after the result in Seattle. "We're a good team. [Against Seattle], I think we proved we're a bit of a lion."

Seattle scored a goal to snap a 255-minute shutout streak for the Timbers, but the team came back to get the all-important road result.

"We showed a lot of character," Spencer said. "We go down a goal and I bet theres a lot of people sitting at home thinking, 'Here we go. Portland's going to lose [by] three or four.'"

Portland will have to find a way to continue its home dominance without the services of forward Bright Dike, while forward Eddie Johnson and defender Kevin Goldthwaite are doubtful, and midfielder Adam Moffat is questionable, all with injuries.

Columbus will be without midfielder Danny O'Rourke, defender Josh Williams and forward Santiago Prim because of injuries.
