Carmona leads Indians past Twins

Baseball Betting Lines

04/25/2007 - Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Fausto Carmona pitched 7 2/3 strong innings to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 5-3 win over the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a brief two-game set at the Metrodome.

Carmona (1-1) allowed two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks for the Indians, who have won three straight games. Travis Hafner homered while Trot Nixon posted two hits and an RBI in the victory. The Indians will now open an eight-game homestand on Wednesday against Texas.

Johan Santana, who recently lost his first regular-season home start since August, 2005, once again suffered defeat at home after he allowed four runs on six hits through seven innings. Santana (3-2) struck out seven batters and issued one walk.

Jason Kubel delivered three hits and an RBI for the Twins, who have dropped three straight and four of their last five games overall. Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter both notched an RBI in the loss.

Hafner's two-out solo home run gave the visitors an early lead in the first inning before two more Cleveland runs in the top of the fourth made it 3-0. Victor Martinez singled to left field and moved to third on a Ryan Garko double before a grounder by Nixon allowed Martinez to cross the plate. Then, with Garko on third, Jason Michaels' one-out fly ball to center was deep enough for another run to score.

The Twins cut their deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame. Morneau's single to left field scored Joe Mauer, who had doubled, and Hunter's sacrifice fly brought home Michael Cuddyer, but Kubel flied out to end the inning.

Carmona tossed a perfect inning in the bottom of the fifth and another 1-2-3 frame followed in the sixth before the Indians added another run in the top of the seventh via Casey Blake's RBI double.

Carmona then worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh and breathed a bit easier after the visitors added another run in the eighth on a Michael Rouse RBI single.

Minnesota's first two batters in the eighth were set down by Carmona, but after a walk to Nick Punto, Aaron Fultz entered the game and induced a groundout off the bat of Mauer.

Closer Joe Borowski started the ninth for Cleveland and surrendered a leadoff single to Cuddyer, but rebounded for consecutive strikeouts of Morneau and Hunter. Cuddyer, who stole second base on defensive indifference, crossed the plate on a single by Kubel, but pinch-hitter Luis Rodriguez flied out to end the game.

Borowski notched his eighth save of the season.

Game Notes

This marked the first time Santana has dropped back-to-back home starts since May 1-17, 2005. He also fell to 7-3 in 15 career starts versus Cleveland...Both teams produced eight hits...The Tribe left seven runners on base...Attendance was 20,849.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
